The Flamengo team confirmed their favoritism and secured a 2-1 victory against São José-RS on Friday (January 5th) in the opening match of Group 19 in the Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior. Despite the narrow lead, Mario Jorge’s team, without much difficulty, secured the win with goals from Petterson and Werton at the José Liberato Municipal Stadium in Osasco. Daniel scored the consolation goal for the Rio Grande do Sul team.
Flamengo had the first opportunity to open the scoring. At the ninth minute, Werton was sent through and faced Edson Junior, who made an excellent save to deny the goal for the number 7.
São José succeeded in their defensive strategy, effectively guarding the entrance to their penalty area. Geovani Oliveira’s team almost reached halftime with a clean sheet, but Petterson, at the 48th minute, capitalized on Zé Welinton’s cross to make it 1-0.
Right after the break, Werton redeemed himself for the missed chance by scoring a fantastic goal. On the rebound from Edson Junior’s save, the Flamengo forward skillfully chipped in to make it 2-0. Watch the video above for the highlight.
Flamengo maintained control of the game and made several changes to the team from the 15th minute onwards. In a rare attack, São José managed to reduce the deficit to 2-1 at the 35th minute, with Daniel converting Thales’ cross into the net. However, São José’s comeback attempt stopped there.
Mario Jorge, the Flamengo coach, fielded the following lineup for their Copinha debut: Dyogo Alves; Felipe Brian (Lorran), Diegão, Darlan (Iago), and Zé Welinton (Rodriguinho); Rayan Lucas, Caio Garcia (Daniel), and Lucyan (Jean Carlos); Werton, Petterson, and Pedro Estevam (Daniel).
With this result, Flamengo shares the top spot in the group with Audax-SP, who won 1-0 against São Bento-SP on Friday. The second round will take place on Monday (January 8th), featuring matches between Audax-SP and São José-RS, as well as São Bento-SP and Flamengo.
